The projects Crystallisation Point and Eastern Sugar sees the Central and Eastern European sugar industry not only as an object of research, but also as a device for talking about the broader context of Europe and the interconnections in the world. Neither economic interdependencies, nor, above all, pressing environmental issues stop at national borders. How might the urgency of the social and ecological polycrisis, together with ongoing struggles for resources and transformations of power, become a driver of more sustainable and equitable futures? The technical term “crystallisation point” refers to the moment in sugar refining when liquid sugar molasses begins to crystallise. In a figurative sense, it is a wider metaphor for the alchemical turning point, a moment at which changes in general begin.
